Holiday Calendar Month by Month – CN Traveller 2012 (Oct to Feb)
Holiday Destinations |
Often there is no definitive time to go
somewhere: for some, braving the icy streets of New York in December may be
worth it just to visit Macy's for a spot of shopping; and while lovers of peace
and tranquility will avoid crowded Europe's beaches in August, others enjoy the
buzz of holidays with guaranteed sunshine and a busy nightlife … Take a tour
through the all 12 months (first we will start from Oct to Feb) and please tell me where you have been or
where are you planning to go …
OCTOBER
Mauritius |
Florida is just coming into season, while Mauritius is perfect
for sun, sea, sand and nature breaks. Réunion, the latter's
less explored neighbour, has less spectacular beaches, but more than
compensates for it with wildly dramatic peaks and a lush green landscape.
Lisbon is sultry, sexy and quiet during autumn, while Seville -
Andalucía's sunny city - finally arrives at a temperature that allows you to
explore its extravagant Moorish architecture and exuberant street life without
needing a siesta. Athens is also excellent in October.
Texas is home to some of the most vibrant cities and towns in North America,
such as the liberal metropolis of Austin, the architecturally stunning San
Antonio and the prairie town of Bandera, and the best time to explore them all
is now.
October also offers the last chance to see the best side of Perth - the capital of Western Australia (pictured).
Located on the shores of the Indian Ocean, it is known for its excellent
weather and clean, wholesome environment.
South America is the place
to go for adventures: Ecuador, which has a number of beautiful national parks
(including the Galápagos Islands) is excellent for scenic treks, while
Argentina's barren but breath-taking Patagonia is dotted with huge estancias
from which you can explore the surroundings on horseback.
NOVEMBER
Vietnam |
New York City makes an
excellent city-break destination in NOVEMBER: like New Orleans, it is fantastic
in the run-up to Christmas. In Cape Town, you'll find
chic hotels, excellent surfing beaches and charming vineyards along the
pristine coastline, while Hong Kong offers a mix of British
colonial history with a rich Chinese culture and tradition. As one of the
world's busiest business centres, it is an ideal destination for shopping, too.
Cape Town |
If you're able to take more than a week off work, we suggest you set
your sights on New Zealand, where Auckland offers city
sophistication and the rugged landscapes of the North and South Islands are
full of natural wonders. Hawaii, too, offers
dramatic scenery and stunning beaches, the latter of which can also be found in
the Brazilian coastal state of Bahia (pictured).
Early winter in Vietnam is sunny and warm, and the country's
white sand beaches are less busy than neighbouring Thailand's during this season,
while Oman's glorious mountains, spectacular deserts and thousand-odd miles of
seaside are also perfect right now.
Plus, the ski season is just beginning in Aspen, Colorado...
Want a sunshine break over the Christmas holidays in DECEMBER? Pack your
bags and head to the glorious Caribbean island of St Barts, where you'll find
peace and dazzling beaches - at high-season prices. Baja California, off
Mexico's Pacific Coast, is decidedly more bohemian - with stunning beaches and
luxury resorts, this stretch of coastline is once again a hot holiday
destination. Belize, a country of sapphire seas, coral reefs, kaleidoscopic
wildlife, great Mayan history and the most understatedly slick resorts, is also
perfect.
DECEMBER
Cambodia |
Humidity levels in Cambodia are relatively
low, making December an ideal time to discover Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.
Neighbouring Laos, home to the historic mountain kingdom
of Luang Prabang (pictured) is also excellent right now.
Hot city destinations include Melbourne and Miami,
but you shouldn't miss the opportunity to explore Europe's colder cities in the
run-up to Christmas - Berlin is freezing but
beautiful, as is the pretty and perfectly conserved medieval city of Bruges in Belgium. But if it's a skiing holiday you want,
the French Alps is the place to go: Courchevel 1850 is
still its glitziest resort.
JANUARY
Swiss Alps |
Is a great month for sale-shopping in Europe,
but risks of bad-weather hiccups mean holiday breaks around the continent tend
to be restricted to winter sports. The Swiss Alps (pictured above) are great
destinations for skiing at this time of year, and tend to not be overcrowded
with children as they can be when the school breaks get underway in February
(for more options check out our recommended Ski Holidays section). But you can
also make use of the weather to go on a cultural break during the low-season - Florence, for example, is cold and rainy at this time of
year, but with hardly any tourist visitors in town, January is a great time to
go to visit its stunning museums.
Florence |
For warmer climbs, the trip from the UK is a long one to guarantee hot
weather, with Asia, South America and Africa the best hotspots.
Visitors to Chile and Peru will find a dry climate on arrival, and now is
also a good time to see the secrets in Laos and Vietnam. The paradise
islands of the Maldives are perfect, and while the east
coast of Africa can get very hot, Zanzibar and South Africa offer
great weather in stunning destinations. Mali - off the beaten track on the edge
of the Sahara - is also warm and dry. Check out
more hot destinations in our Tropical section.
FEBRUARY
Goa |
Is a great month to find your inner karma around the world. Spiritually
guided destinations like Goa (pictured above), Delhi and Marrakech are all great to visit at this time of year, whether it's for
yoga, sightseeing or simply getting a winter tan in foreign climes.
For city visits, Delhi is fantastic, Miami offers
some South Beach cool, and Mexico City is a giant that needs cool
temperatures of this month to be enjoyed, while Adelaide's
mix of city and nature makes it our favourite Australian city right now.
Mexico City |
In North America, the skiing is good in Banff (Canada) and Jackson Hole (USA), among others nearby,
while beach lovers should head to Australia, one of the West Indies' many
islands, or perhaps even to Venezuela.
Remember to tell me, where is your next trip to ?
